The HISD board voted on Thursday night to create two new magnet schools specializing in two key Houston industries: health care and energy.
Both are set to open in the fall. The middle school will involve a collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, and the high school will be a partnership with the Independent Petroleum Institute of America.
The Baylor school will be housed at the old Ryan Middle School, at 2610 Elgin, the Third Ward campus that the board voted in March to shut down due to declining enrollment.
The location for the Energy Institute is not confirmed, but HISD officials are considering the former Holden Elementary at 812 W. 28th St.
“The goal with both of these schools is to make them premier middle and high schools in America,” said Andrew Houlihan, HISD’s chief of major projects.
