Mitsubishi I Miev makes Houston debut

Jackey Noons rolled off the Champion Mitsubishi lot in a brand new all-electric Mitsubishi Miev.

Noons, who is the president and Chief Executive Officer of 3 Men Movers, is the first Houston resident to buy Mitsubishi’s new all-electric car.

Lee Van Damm, the dealership’s internet manager, said he doesn’t expect it to be the last electric car he sells this year.

“We have a lot of people interested,” he said. “They are not hard to sell. For people who don’t live a long distance from work, these are the perfect cars for them.”

The Miev just edges out the Nissan Leaf as the EPA’s fuel economy leader. The car gets 112 combined miles per gallon equivalent, and it can get 62 miles on a single charge, Van Damm said.

It takes seven hours to full charge on a 240-volt charger and can charge up to 80 percent in 30 minutes on a quick charger.

And unlike other all-electric cars, it doesn’t come with the hefty price tag of other electric cars.

The Miev costs $29,125 without a federal tax credit of $7,500. Van Damm said owners can save nearly $10,000 in gasoline costs over the first five years, making the car an ideal pick for some drivers.

“If you live near downtown, it is a perfect car for you,” he said.
