Texas electricity: who's the biggest?

2009_nov_texas_retail_electric_markets A breakdown of market share in Texas residential and businesses. (Reliant Energy data)

Texas’ electric retailers usually don’t share details on how many customers they have, but a slide from a presentation at NRG Energy’s recent analyst conference provides an interesting snap-shot:
TXU Energy has always had more residential customers than Reliant, starting off the era of open markets with about 1 million more customers.
Direct Energy is the retail arm of U.K. utility giant Centrica, which entered the market with deep pockets (buying the retail customers base of Entergy for example). Stream Energy is a Dallas firm that started small, using a multi-level marketing strategy to get customers — i.e. a network of independent sales people signing up friends and family.
In the business market Reliant has held its lead — even though it had stopped taking new customers for several months last year as it experienced a credit crisis.
