16 billionth barrel mark on TAPS

The Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System, the 30-plus year-old, 800-mile line from the North Slope to Valdez, should hit the 16 billion barrel milestone sometime this summer. How much oil is that? The U.S. currently uses about 20 million barrels per day (may be a bit lower given the recession) so that’s the equivelant of about 800 days of consumption.
We wrote about the retooling of the system for a new era of lower production last year.
