OTC: Climate change at an oil and gas conference?

Yes, really. OTC will kick off today with a panel discussion on climate change. Has the industry gone soft and embraced An Inconvenient Truth? Or is this really just a nod toward what many say is a legislative inevitability?
The panel will include an author of the big Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report that many point to as the final word on the subject (Kevin Trenberth, National Center for Atmospheric Research), Chevron’s main climate change guy (John Cain) and a Texas A&M professor who has written on solar cycles (which some point to as a bigger culprit in climate change).
Here’s the kicker: one of the moderators is an Exxon Mobil exec (Joseph Reilly, head of upstream research). This may have seemed unthinkable a year or so ago, but the Irving-based oil giant did make more than a couple of references to “reducing greenhouse gases” during its earnings call last week.
