CERAWeek: First new nuke applications may take longer

More from NRC Commissioner Lyons:
“I would not be surprised if the initial applications will probably take longer than we hoped. I think you’re right to suggest we’re on a learning curve. Industry is on a learning curve.”
Industry has to standardize its equipment and designs as much as possible, he said, in order for things to move quickly.
The NRC has been trying to increase its staff by 200 workers a year to deal with the surge of applications, but with attrition of about 200 per year due to retirement, etc. he said the hiring has been about 400 per year.
“If the ‘renaissance’ really takes off at the level some propose there may be hiring pressure from the utilities that make it difficult for us to maintain,” he said.
