CERAWeek: 1 new nuke plant = 35,000 hours of inspection

“I believe the level of public assurance relies on the NRC being a tough regulatory. We must ask tough questions,” said Peter Lyons, Nuclear Regulatory Commission commissioner.
Over 20 combined operation and construction licenses (COLs), equaling more than 30 new nuclear power plants, are expected, Lyons said. Four COLs have been submitted so far, including one for two new reactors at the South Texas Project near Bay City.
Each new plant will require 35,000 inspection hours, Lyons said.
The NRC is required to recover most of its budget by fees paid by nuclear industry.
