CERAWeek: Qatargas exec bullish on LNG

Ahmed Yousef Al-Khulaifi, COO of Qatargas Liquefied Gas Co., said natural gas accounts for about 20 percent of all global energy supplies.
In the past ,natural gas has largely been a regional product, used close to where it was produced. But advancements in technology allows for greater use of liquefied natural gas tankers that move the fuel in a super-chilled, more compact form, he noted.
LNG shipments are expected to grow by 7 percent to 8 percent per year in the near future, he said. Over 45 million tons of LNG capacity expansion is under construction.
The U.S. Gulf of Mexico is the one market where LNG is closest to being traded like oil, but that will happen in other markets in the future, Al-Khulaifi said.
