Is water the next oil?

Amid all the discussion at CERA Week about the world’s growing energy needs and how they will be met, the potential scarcity of another natural resource has come into focus.
Water, said energy industry leaders and analysts Thursday, could become as valuable as oil in coming decades if population growth, particularly in Asia, continues at its blistering pace.
China and India will soon have a combined 3 billion people, or 10 times more than the United States, said Zin Smati, president and CEO of Suez Energy North America.
Finding energy solutions to accomodate the region’s growth will be a challenge unto itself, he said. Finding enough water for everyone in could be an even bigger wildcard, the scope of which is not yet known, he said.
