Rex Tillerson, ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson called CERAWeek “one of the most formative and informative” events on the calendar.
“It is my view we have cause for optimism,” he said if the industry continues to use its strengths.
“We’re responsible for many of the products that define modern life,” he said, including medical devices and toys.
ExxonMobil has spent over $210 billion from 1999 to 2005 in trying to find new energy sources.
Energy production and environmental production need not be zero sums, he said.
“But for an industry as central to progress … the realities we face are broadly misunderstood by those we serve.”
For energy workers that scale is intuitive, but “for the public at large, including most policy makers, they are not intuitive.”
The industry needs to first better explain the time frame which E&P companies move. Politicians think in 2 year chunks, or until they next election, while politicians think in terms of decades.
