Amarillo has the cheapest gasoline in Texas this week at an average $1.46 per gallon. Drivers in El Paso are paying the most statewide at an average $1.62 per gallon.
Many gasoline stations across the Houston metro area are selling regular gasoline for less than $1.50 a gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
But GasBuddy also warned that some states are considering implementing fuel tax hikes this year.
AAA estimates the average price of gasoline nationwide for 2016 may end up cheaper than 2015’s average of $2.40 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline.
The price this Dec. 31 will cap off a year when plummeting crude oil prices, which have now fallen nearly 30 percent for all of 2015, also dragged down gasoline prices to their lowest since the Great Recession.
AAA Texas on Thursday reported the statewide average slipped to $2.04 per gallon. Prices at the pump across the U.S. settled at $2.29 per gallon.
Monday’s national average price of gasoline is $2.59 per gallon, which is the lowest average for late August since 2004, AAA stated, despite record-high demand and ongoing refinery problems. The Houston area averaged a lower $2.33 a gallon, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 2,559 gas outlets in Houston.
AAA Texas on Thursday reported the nationwide price at the pump held steady at $2.62 per gallon.
In the Texas metro areas, drivers in Texarkana are paying the least at $2.32 per gallon while motorists in El Paso are paying the most, $2.63 per gallon.
Cheap gasoline prices are causing more drivers to take to the highways, with an estimated 41.9 million people expected to travel more than 50 miles this Independence Day, the highest total since 2007, according to AAA.
