CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Senate President Jeff Kessler is hoping the Legislature’s recent trip to North Dakota will build support for his plans to create a natural gas trust fund in West Virginia.
Lawmakers and other business leaders flew to North Dakota last week for a day of meetings with state officials to discuss that state’s savings account for oil and gas taxes.
Kessler wants lawmakers to set aside tax revenue similar to what is being done in North Dakota.
He has introduced bills over the last several legislative sessions attempting to create the fund in the state that has seen a surge in natural gas production.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that Kessler said the most important lesson from the trip is, “It’s something that’s tried and true and it works.”
