Entergy Corp. plans job cuts, including in The Woodlands

Power company Entergy Corp. says it plans to cut 800 jobs — nearly one-third of them in Louisiana, where the bulk of its employees live.

Spokesman Chanel Lagarde said  layoffs have begun and should be completed this year.  Entergy, he said,  is committed to keeping its headquarters in New Orleans.

Arkansas would lose about 165 jobs, Texas 115 and New York 110. Most states would lose 4 percent to 6 percent of their Entergy workers; Texas would lose about 10 percent.

Entergy serves 27 counties in Southeast Texas, including those in the Houston area. The company said about 60 jobs would be cut in the The Woodlands, with the rest of the Texas cuts planned for Beaumont and elsewhere.

Mississippi stands to lose 80 jobs, while Massachusetts, Michigan and Vermont about 30 each. Lagarde says 240 Louisiana job cuts include about 160 in the New Orleans area. That’s about 6 percent of Entergy’s metro-area jobs and 5 percent statewide.  Louisiana layoffs make up 30 percent of the total.
