Smitherman named to national committee

Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman has been named chair of the gas committee for the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.

The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners is made up of members of governmental agencies that regulate energy, telecommunications and water utilities. The committee focuses on transportation, distribution and sale of natural gas.

Smitherman, noting the increasingly visible role of natural gas in the nation’s energy mix, said he expects the committee to focus on pipeline safety, use of natural gas for transportation and the export of liquid natural gas, among other issues.

Smitherman was appointed to the Railroad Commission in 2011 and was elected chairman in February. He previously had been a member of the Public Utility Commission of Texas.
