Refinery workers stage vigil outside gov’s mansion

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Several dozen workers from a trio of imperiled oil refineries in southeastern Pennsylvania staged a candlelight vigil outside the state’s executive mansion asking Gov. Tom Corbett to help them keep their jobs.

About 80 workers gathered outside the mansion Wednesday night, hours after steelworkers connected with the plant displayed banners at the state Capitol.

Two refineries have already closed in Delaware County and a third could shut down in Philadelphia by mid-summer if a buyer isn’t found.

The refinery workers want Corbett to come to their aid and broker a deal that would keep all three facilities open. Refineries owned by ConocoPhillips and Sunoco have already shut down. A second Sunoco refinery faces an uncertain future.

Union officials tell the Delaware County Daily Times the refineries employ about 2,500.
