BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Angelle says 38 rigs were actively drilling in Louisiana Outer Continental Shelf waters in the most recent weekly count.
Angelle said in a Friday news release the number marks a new high in the nearly 20 months since federal regulators declared a ban on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The May 2010 moratorium followed the April 2010 BP oil disaster.
The moratorium officially was lifted in October 2010 but federal regulators issued no new permits until February 2011.
