South Texas nuke expansion hearing set for Oct. 21

A panel from the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will hear oral arguments later this month on plans to build two new nuclear power reactors on the site of the existing South Texas Project  in Bay City.

The public hearing will be Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. at the Bay City Civic Center, 201 7th St.

The ASLB is the independent body within the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that presides over issues such as the licensing of civilian nuclear facilities.

While the session is open to the public observation, the only speakers will be the parties already admitted to the proceedings — namely the license applicants and a number of public interest groups that are opposed to the new units.

NRC policy prohibits signs, banners, posters or displays in the hearing room.

The ASLB panel will hear oral argument on matters including motions to dismiss the public challenge to the license, requests to file additional contentions based on the NRC staff’s draft Environmental Impact Statement and a request for access to a draft NRC document regarding new reactor reviews.

You can find the license application documents here. Documents related to the ASLB proceeding  can be found here (but it may take a bit of digging around).
