Angola and oil: two sides of the coin

NPR’ s Planet Money team had an interesting piece today about the “paradox of oil” (it’s gone by other names too), or the notion that many resource rich countries continue to have widespread poverty.
In the piece, linked below, they talk to an American with an unnamed energy company in Angola and how he sees the disparity. In brief, he concludes the Angolan national oil company, Sonangol, doesn’t use its wealth for the benefit of the country.

Also today ExxonMobil put out a release noting its 15th year in Angola, where it has produced more than 1 billion barrels of oil. They note the work they’ve done there and in other parts of Africa fighting malaria and other health problems as well as work to help empower women in Africa to get into business themselves.
