Anadarko Petroleum said this morning it discovered oil off the coast of Sierra Leone by drilling18,500 feet in about 5,900 feet of water. It’s the first deepwater test in the Sierra Leone-Liberian Basin, the company said.
“The Venus discovery confirms the existence of an active petroleum system in the basin and enhances the prospectivity of our vast West Africa acreage position,” said Bob Daniels, Anadarko Sr. Vice President, Worldwide Exploration in a statement. “With Jubilee on the east and Venus on the west, we have established bookends spanning approximately 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) across two of the most exciting and highly prospective basins in the world.”
The FT caught word of the plan earlier of the venture with Woodside. Here’s a map of the area and a link to Anadarko’s release.
While it’s no Tiber, BP’s deepwater find in the Gulf of Mexico (at least not yet) it’s a good sign of things to come in a basin that was known to have potential.
