The folks at McKinsey & Co. have made an interesting interactive graphic that shows energy consumption through 2020 based on a number of variables you can control, such as Gross Domestic Product and fuel efficiency standards.
According to the summary:
“… GDP is the most important factor affecting short-term demand for both oil and energy. In the longterm, higher fuel efficiency standards can slow the growth of oil demand. At the same time, capturing opportunities in energy productivity can dramatically reduce the growth of demand in energy.”
The impact of electric vehicles on energy consumption according to the chart is surprisingly limited, which will likely be a disappointment to EV enthusiasts. It’s all part of a larger energy demand report McKinsey puts out.
Be sure to look at the answers to reader comments at the bottom of the graphic. The readers raise good questions and the McKinsey guys don’t leave them hanging.
