BusinessWeek has published its list of cities with the most valuable patents issued (not just any old patents, mind you), and we take 10th place:
Houston is the capital of the American oil industry, with ExxonMobil, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes, and Halliburton all headquartered there. But the biggest city in Texas doesn’t rely on petroleum engineers alone for patents; it derives them as well from medical researchers at Rice University and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Here’s a bit more on the methodology.
Houston came in ahead of New York (No. 11) and, more importantly, Dallas (No. 18).
The other top 10: San Francisco, Tokyo, Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Boise (!?), Seattle and Portland, Ore.
