HOUSTON — David McClanahan will step down as CEO and president of CenterPoint Energy, and will leave his seat on the board of directors, at the end of the year, the company announced Tuesday.
CenterPoint’s board of directors has named Chief Operating Officer Scott M. Prochazka, 47, the new CEO.
McClanahan, 64, will serve as a special adviser to Prochazka during the first half of 2014. He has been CEO of the Houston-based power and natural gas utility since 2001.
Prochazka, 47, has been chief operating officer for 18 months. He joined CenterPoint Energy in October 2001, rising to senior division vice president for electric operations in 2009.
Prior to Centerpoint Energy, Prochazka worked for Dow Chemical. He currently serves on the board of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas and Gridwise Alliance.
Prochazka has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Texas and has completed executive development programs at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
“Scott has helped us achieve strong financial and operational performance in our business units, and he has a good depth of experience from leading both our electric and natural gas utility businesses,” McClanahan said in a written statement.
CenterPoint manages power transmission and distribution in Houston and has a natural gas distribution business in Texas and five other states.
